Lundy Residence
This Aspen West End home designed by architect Victor Lundy in the early 1970s was a studio for his wife and a vacation place for his family. It presents itself rather formidably on two sides, facing a Herbert Bayer–designed house on one side and Lake Avenue on another, its three, nearly twenty-foot-high iconic walls are mostly uninterrupted brick. The fourth, facing Triangle Park, is a two-story black-mullioned glass pop-out engineered with the advice of Hannskarl Bandel, who helped Eero Saarinen build St. Louis’s Gateway Arch.
The feel of the interior is one of profound serenity, simultaneously open and private, the main volume screened with almost fortress-like solidity on three sides, and on the fourth open to the landscape
The home’s fluency of form, flow, and function reflect Lundy’s training at both NYU, where he studied art and architecture in the Beaux Arts tradition before enlisting in the Army during World War II, and Harvard, where he studied with minimalist master Walter Gropius and earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees
veselbrand was asked to create cabinetry and millwork that not only complemented the simplicity and serenity of the original space as it was intended, but with form and proportions that would feel appropriate within the volume of the main space, yet not overwhelm a user on a daily basis.
A simple monolithic perimeter module that is furniture like, yet opens to reveal immense functionality for a range of tasks and users fits this prerequisite well. A multi level island / bar that accommodates the many uses that this main living space will see, is full of functionality and its sleek integrated features flow from the clean organic block shapes.
Material selection was critical in keeping the essence of the space, yet reflect a timeless, but updated look that functioned with todays varied uses.
A 1300 lb. / 14 foot dining room table was fabricated using high tech aircraft aluminum core material for rigidity over the 10’ span between the solid 3/4” CNC machined and hand patina’d steel legs. Mating the latest in technology with the simplicity of the past, seemed to reflect the overall balance of craftsmanship through out this space. Assembled on site, this table anchors the center space for a comfortable seating of 10.
veselbrand was challenged by many aspects of this project, and we met those challenges and continued to add many unique one of a kind options / solutions to make this kitchen and dining area exquisitely unique and yet in sync with what we hope was Lundys original intent, of a comfortable place for family and friends.
Materials:
cross sawn / wire brushed / fumed white oak with natural open pore matt sealer
gloss lacquer island cabinetry and panels
leathered Capolavoro stone tops
matte black Fenix bar cube with integrated sink
Miele appliances
Dornbracht plumbing
